Dear Ms Abbott MP,
I am writing to ask you as my member of parliament to sign 2 early day motions. These are issues I believe are important to the people of Hackney. They are:
EDM572 FREQUENT FLYER LEVY CAMPAIGN and EDM 591 VOTING SYSTEM FOR GENERAL ELECTIONS
The people of Hackney are under flight paths and come from countries which will be most adversely effected by climate change. Also people in the more deprived areas often cannot afford regular air travel which is a leading cause of climate change. In our efforts to curtail climate change they shouldn't be adversely targeted, the frequent flyers should be discouraged rather than rewarded.
Many of the people of Hackney would appreciate a proportional voting system which would mean that their vote counted whoever they vote for. The influence of a vote on the outcome of a general election in Hackney is far less than in a more marginal seat elsewhere in the country meaning that not everyone's vote is equal in determining the make up of the parliament and vast swathes of opinion are under represented or not represented at all. A PR system would help rebuild trust in our politicians and democratic system.
I fear that you will rely that the convention states that as a shadow minister you are unable to sign EDMs, whoever I would argue that that is a convention and not a rule and until we have a written constitution then the convention isn't worth the paper it isn't written on. It would be a good way of making up for missing the Article 50 vote by being a maverick and ignoring a convention that is designed to maintain the status quo rather than improve the system we have.
Please take my request into consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.
